Exploring the World of Ericoid Mycorrhizae and Endophytes in Cranberry: A Study on Isolation and Characterization
Thursday September 26, 2024 8:00am - 9:15am HST
Speaker: Dr. Jyostna Devi Mura, Research Molecular Biologist, Vegetable Crops Research Unit, USDA-ARS, Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences, Madison, WI
Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) is a perennial fruit crop native to North America that thrives in low-nutrient acidic, sandy, and peat soils. Most terrestrial plants have microbial symbionts, such as mycorrhizae and bacteria, that help them acquire nutrients and adapt to stress. The webinar will cover the isolation and characterization of ericoid mycorrhizae and endophytes, as well as the microbial community structure in rhizosphere from various cranberry ecosystems. Furthermore, the webinar will discuss several potential ericoid symbionts that play important roles in soil nutrition and plant growth in cranberry, and interrelationship between soils and plant health.

Integrative Postharvest Management to Maintain Apple Fruit Quality and Sustainability
Thursday September 26, 2024 9:15am - 10:30am HST
Speakers: Dr. Daniel Neuwald and Mr. Felix Büchele
The first presentation in the webinar will be "Redefining the cooling load in apple fruit storage" given by Mr. Felix Büchele. Cooling systems in fruit storage are typically designed based on simplified estimations of the heat load during initial cool-down and an arbitrarily chosen optimal duration for heat removal. However, this approach overlooks heat transfer and cool down characteristics of the horticultural product, resulting in overdimensioned cooling systems in commercial storage facilities. The DyNatCool project aims to simulate the transient heat loads during long-term storage of fruit and validate it in large scale storage experiments, for an optimized dimensioning of cooling systems and improved energy efficiency.
The second presentation will be given by Dr. Daniel Alexandre Neuwald: "Practical & Cost-Effective Strategies for Enhancing Economic and Ecological Sustainability in Fruit Storage". Long-term storage is an essential tool for farmers to optimize their marketing strategy and provide customers throughout the year with fresh and locally produced fruit. However, as energy prices soar in Germany, the postharvest sector faces substantial economic challenges. Rising costs for storage are not compensated by a similar development in market prices, as farmers are competing with imported and freshly harvested fruit, often produced under cheaper conditions. Traditional recommendations for improved energy efficiency during storage usually involve costly renovations of room structures or installations of new equipment. In his talk, Dr. Neuwald shares practical insights on how even small adjustments in storage management can yield substantial energy savings without breaking the bank.

Learning/Working in an Interdisciplinary Aspect of Food and Agriculture Systems
Thursday September 26, 2024 1:30pm - 2:00pm HST
Traditional disciplines in food and agriculture education are insufficient to fulfill the gaps of knowledge and innovation to solve future challenges. How agriculture and farming have been perceived is very different from what reality needs to be. We will share examples and current jobs available in an integrated farming/food system program in North Carolina to provide skill training, career development, and workforce development opportunities within a private/public collaboration. The integrated approach including production, marketing, finance, risk management, renewable energy, Workload, expectations, and types of tasks will be explained including compensation and other support.

Same Dormancy Progression But Different Chill Requirements - How Is That Possible?
Thursday September 26, 2024 2:45pm - 3:45pm HST
Speaker: Dr. Al Kovaleski
Studies in species spanning the seed plant phylogeny, including ornamental plants, urban trees, and woody perennial fruit crops have shown that dormancy progresses at a similar pace for all when using a cold hardiness-related phenotype. However, clear differences exist in “chill requirement” and adaptation across environments even for cultivars within the same species. While these concepts appear to be in conflict, they are not. Here we will explore ongoing work, and a combination of data and modeling approaches to understand how this comes to be based on new dormancy theory.

Biostimulants in Propagation
Thursday September 26, 2024 4:00pm - 5:00pm HST
Speaker: Dr. Ewelina Jacygrad
The biostimulant market is projected to reach USD 7.6 billion by 2029, as growers increasingly adopt biostimulants to boost crop productivity and profitability. The composition of a biostimulant varies based on its intended use and manufacturing process. Some biostimulants are formulated to enhance nutrient uptake, others to increase resistance to abiotic stress, and yet others to stimulate plant growth or improve quality attributes like taste, color, or shelf-life of the produce. The effectiveness of these substances can greatly depend on the plant genotype, the method of application, the environmental conditions, and the specific needs of the plant at the time of application. This webinar will focus on the effectiveness of biostimulants in propagating woody plants.
