Dr. W. Garrett Owen is Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist of Sustainable Greenhouse and Nursery Production Systems with primary responsibilities in teaching (20%), research (30%), and Extension (50%) in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at The Ohio State University (OSU).

Dr. Owen's research program follows an evidence-based practice to develop Extension resources for practical action. The core focus areas of the Owen Lab research program includes environmental factors affecting vegetative propagation, plant growth regulators, sustainable soilless substrates and fertility management, carbon and water footprinting, artificial intelligence, and problem diagnostics. Additionally, Dr. Owen authors Ball Horticulture GrowerTalks’ Herbaceous Perennial PGR Guide.

Dr. Owen is the undergraduate advisor for the new Controlled Environment Agriculture specialization in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at OSU. He co-teaches HCS 4200: Controlled Environment Agriculture Capstone course and is the instructor for HCS 5320: Floriculture Crop Production offered to both undergraduate and graduate students at OSU Columbus and Wooster campuses.

Dr. Owen earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from North Carolina State University in 2011 and 2013, respectively, and his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 2017. He was previously a Greenhouse Outreach Specialist in the Department of Horticulture at Michigan State University from 2017 to 2020, and an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist of Greenhouse and Controlled-Environments in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Kentucky from 2020 to 2022.
