ASHS 2024 Conference Information 

Information for those attending the American Society for Horticulture Science conference in Honolulu, September 23-27.

The American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) is aware of recent reports concerning the hospitality workers union in Honolulu and their vote to approve a strike. This does not only involve the property where our conference is being held, and to clarify, currently, they are not on strike.

It is our understanding that the union is in discussions with the hotel owners. At this time, there have been no changes to the services provided by the hotel. The Hilton Hawaiian Village has assured us that they have a contingency plan in place to ensure that necessary services for our conference will be provided to meet our needs. As you know the ASHS Annual Conference is an important function of the organization, and it is our obligation to provide our stakeholders with this central educational function for which we have contractual obligations.

We are in continued communication with the hotel on this situation and are working with our partners in Hawaii so that the conference will take place as scheduled. We understand that there are ASHS members that have been contacted by email and by phone by the union representatives. Please understand that your information did not come from ASHS, and we take data privacy very seriously.

We do not have any information regarding the specifics of the potential strike plans or the requests being made by the workers. We deeply value the dedication and hard work of hospitality workers, who play a vital role in making our conferences successful. We understand that the ongoing negotiations are important, and we respect the right of workers to advocate for themselves. ASHS remains hopeful that all parties involved will reach a peaceful and satisfactory agreement.
